It’s the old 80/20 Rule. 20% of the work you do creates 80% on the results. You want to focus on the 20% that will provide you with the most results.
Here are 5 ways to accomplish that:
1. Focus
Focus totally on one topic at a time. This is probably the most important thing to do and maybe the hardest for most people. Get rid of all distractions. Find a quiet place to work, even if it’s the kitchen table at midnight. If you’re distracted by noises, shut off the radio and the TV. Don’t check your email while you’re watching a video training.
Identify one task. Is it writing a blog article or researching a topic? Stick with it until you are done or have reached the time allotted. Then move on to the next task. You will be much more productive by focusing on one task at a time.
2. Organize
Organize yourself and organize your work.
For yourself, set aside a specific time and place each day that you are able to work on your blog. Don’t make exceptions to that time except in emergencies. Start with small blocks of time, like one hour – maybe 9:30 – 10:30 each morning. Later you can add on time as you are able. Research says that time slots of 1 ½ – 2 hours are most productive.
Organize your work. Make file folders for topics you are researching for blogs. A place for everything and everything in its place is a best practice to follow. Keep everything off your desk, except for the information you are currently working on. Clutter decreases productivity.
Have a plan for your your blog, when you are going to post and what type of post you are going to make.
For more info on this see the blog post “Thinking of Starting a Blog”.
3. Time Management
Time management applies to your work, as well as your day.
Schedule the other activities in your day so that you have that designated time free to focus on writing for your blog. Don’t schedule a Doctor’s appointment during your blog work time. It is not free time.
Make a plan for the hour or so that you have designated for focusing on your blog. Perhaps the first ½ hour is spent researching for a post and the second ½ hour is for writing the post.
With time management you will accomplish more.
4. Health
Staying healthy is crucial to your ability be productive.
Be sure you are getting the proper nutrition throughout the day. Breakfast Programs in schools show that kids learn better when they have a nutritious breakfast. Adults should eat breakfast for the same reason. Don’t snack on junk food full of calories while you are working. The sugar will give you a short high and then you experience lows where you feel tired. Schedule balanced meals and snacks all day.
Get at least 8 hours of sleep each day. Research shows that people work better when well rested. Shut off video games, television or other electronics at least ½ hour before bedtime. Allow time for your brain to calm down. Make you bedroom as dark as possible. Turn all alarm clocks and electronics with LED lighting to the lowest level. Get rid of that clock that projects the time onto the ceiling. Research shows that doing these things helps you get to sleep faster and rest better.
5. Schedule Breaks
Schedule 5 minute breaks during your work time. Stretch, get a drink of water or just close your eyes. You will find it makes focussing easier. Be careful not to get distracted though.
During the day try to schedule at least one 20 minute mediation, nap or quiet time. You will find you get back to work with more energy and renewed motivation.
